A Canadian’s reflection on work with a Gandhian activist movement in India
Paul Schwartzentruber
Ekta Parishad is a contemporary grassroots campaign in India for land and livelihood rights of
impoverished rural populations, including Adivasis or tribals – India’s original peoples. Paul
Schwartzentruber presents his experience of Ekta Parishad and reflects on its aims and
methodologies which are inspired and informed by Gandhian principles.
Paul Schwartzentruber is a former university lecturer in theology and the director of a
community centre. He now works as an independent writer and researcher. He has travelled as a
volunteer with Ekta Parishad in India for the last four years.
